Movie Under the Stars and Berowra Hail Storm Volunteer Thank-you

Nearly everyone in the Berowra area was affected in some way by the devastating hail storm last year. And I know many of us are still suffering, fighting with flailing tarps, failing insurance companies and flooding homes.

One thing I think we all agree on though is the amazing response from our emergency services and other volunteers, local and abroad, in the wake of the storm. It was overwhelming to see the the amount of support and Berowra spirit that shone through – we truly do live in a remarkable community.

I think we could all use a night out to relax, socialise and most importantly to say thanks to all those who gave their time selflessly helping out those affected by the storm. So on Friday 12th April (last day of school term) at Warrina Oval there will be a special Movie Under the Stars / storm volunteer thank-you event, and you’re all invited!

This free event, supported by Hornsby Council and Berowra Apex, will feature live music, children’s entertainment, food and drinks and of course a family friendly movie (“Smallfoot”). Oh and did I mention there will be fireworks? Yes, fireworks!

Lots of food options available including sausage sizzle, gozleme, middle eastern, popcorn, fairy floss, slushies, hot and cold drinks. Live music featuring Winblu big band, The Niaben Sea and school bands. Jumping castles and Bugs About will be there too, and much, much more.

To cap it all off, our emergency services will be there mingling with the crowd and enjoying the evening. They will share a few words with us about the storm from their perspective, and will be on hand to have a chat.

The event will commence at 4pm, with the movie starting at around 6:30pm, which will be followed by the fireworks display. So bring a blanket, pull up some grass and enjoy the night!

Woodchop 2018 is here!

Sharpen your axes, the 2018 Berowra Woodchop Festival is here! Come and join us on Sunday 12th August, 10am-5pm in the Berowra Village Tavern car park.

This year will be bigger than ever, with something for everyone. There will be stalls of all types, fun fair rides, a climbing wall, live entertainment, food and of course world-class competitive wood-chopping! This year we also have a unique 9D Cinema exeperience – come and try out this amazing experience.

There will be a raffle in support of the Scouts and RFS, with thousands of dollars worth of prizes to be won across three different draws, including some great tool packs from Berlian Timbers and some lovely custom-made Woodchop jewellery from Sassart Jewellers.

This is the biggest festival of the year in the Berowra district so bring the family for this great extravaganza. All proceeds from this event go straight back into our local community via Apex donations and initiatives.

Of course this festival wouldn’t be possible without the kind and generous support of many local organisations:

Berowra Apex Supporting Drought Affected Farmers

Berowra Apex is Going on a Road Trip to Support Farmers in Drought

Berowra Apex members and some mates from Sydney District 4×4 have organised a convoy of 9 4WDs, plus trailers, with 6 tonne of high nutrient cattle feed, 1 tonne of dog food and, hopefully, plenty of drought relief packages for farmers. This will be kindly distributed through the fantastic network of the local CWA branches west of Cobar. We will be leaving on the weekend following the Berowra Woodchop Festival, August 17, 18 and 19 (Friday to Sunday).

If anyone in the local community would like to support Berowra Apex with the drought relief project there are several ways to help. Berowra Apex is the event organiser of the annual Berowra Woodchop Festival; we will have our own ‘Drought Relief’ stall set up, next to the Berowra Lions stall, where we would like to encourage community members to bring ‘Relief Packages’ for the farming families. Alternately there will be a collection point at the stall for financial donations; every dollar will be delivered to the farmers.
If you would like to contribute, and it is not practical to attend the Woodchop Festival, please feel free to drop any ‘Relief Package’ items to 9 Clinton Close Berowra Heights (leave on the porch please). If you have any questions please feel free to contact Nathan Gilbert on 0415 159 139. Alternately if you would like to make a financial contribution to the Drought Relief project, Berowra Apex had set up a designated ‘Drought Relief’ account:

Drought Relief (Apex Club of Berowra)
Bank: Bendigo Bank
BSB: 633000
Acc. No. 150542819

With regards to the ‘Relief Packages’ we, including input from the CWA, would like to ask that the dignity of the proud Aussie farmers be respected; please do not include any form of clothing or bedding, perishable foods, used or opened items and please ensure all items are of a reputable brand.

Some ‘Relief Package’ suggestions could include, but not limited to:

  • Family Pack: Bulk loo paper, cleaning products, nappies, baby wipes, baby formula, coffee, tea, large rice and pastas, sunscreen, toothbrush and toothpaste, first aid products, and a large Milo for the kids😊
  • Ladies Pack: Perfumes, anti-perspirant, moisturisers, sanitary items, make-up kits, water-free hair products and a box of chocolates😊
  • Men’s Pack: Deodorant, razors, shaving cream, nail clippers and a quality packet of biscuits😊

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

Berowra Apex would like to thank all the community members who have supported us over the years and look forward to many more years to come. If you are interested in joining, or learning more about Berowra Apex, you can read about the club and its activities here on the website.

Berowra Woodchop Festival 2018

The Berowra Woodchop Festival is back again in 2018 bigger and better than ever. This year’s festival will be held on Sunday 12 August 2018 in the Berowra Village Tavern carpark and surrounding grounds from 10am to 5pm.

Now in its 24th year, Woodchop is an old style “fair” attracting over 4,000 people to enjoy market stalls, amusement rides, food, live music and a world class round of the NSW Axemen competition. All proceeds raised are returned to the community via Apex service programs including donations to many local charitable causes.

It promises to be a great day out, so come along and enjoy the festivities!

Stall Applications

We are now taking applications from stallholders. If you wish to run a stall at Woodchop, please download and return the Woodchop 2018 – Stall Application Form. Stalls are $90 for a standard stall and $160 for a food stall, with an additional $20 if you require power. Stall spaces are 3m x 3m in size. Spaces are limited so get in quick!

Raffle Donations

Every year the Apex club runs a raffle at Woodchop to raise money for Apex service programs in the community, as well as for community groups including the local Scouts and the Rural Fire Service.

We are seeking a range of prizes suitable for a major raffle prize, minor raffle prizes and a large number of small items for the chocolate wheel. All prize donors are recognised through thank-you boards displayed in high-traffic areas as well as at raffle ticket booths.

Businesses contributing major prizes valued at over $500 will be given the opportunity to display signage around the raffle area during Woodchop, and will be promoted in the lead-up to the event via online/social media, and throughout the day in PA announcements. We are also seeking headline prizes of value $1000 or more – please contact us directly if interested.

Any (new) item you choose to generously donate would be warmly welcomed and we would be happy to pick up it up – just send us an email at and we’ll take care of the rest.

Thank you in advance for your assistance with Woodchop and your support of the local community.

Apex Blues Mobile Hits the Road to Raise Money for the Starlight Foundation

The Berowra Apex Blues Brothers hit the road in their “Blues Mobile” earlier this year, driving across NSW and South Australia in the annual Trek4Kids rally to support the Starlight Foundation. Thanks to the kind donations of the sponsors and the general public, the team was able to raise thousands of dollars for this very worthy charity.

The Trek4Kidz is a week-long event, exploring different regional areas of the Australian countryside by car. Since its inception, the Trek has visited more than 400 towns, 45 schools and raised over $1,600,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

The team of Ruard Gerritson, Nathan Gilbert, Keith Roscarel and Brad Waters had a blast and only broke down a few times. See photos of their adventure below.

Berowra Apex would not be able to help Starlight without the support of Trek Sponsors including Berowra Car Care, Berowra Village Tavern, Nobby Kitchens and Francesca Parrino.
